Welch Family Armorial Graces Cover of American Ancestors Spring 2020 Magazine
The New England Historic Genealogical Society’s (NEHGS) American Ancestors magazine features the Welch Armorial (coat of arms) on the cover of its Spring 2020 issue.
The Armorial description states that it honors John Welch (1711-1789), “perhaps Boston’s most accomplished woodcarver.”
Welch “carved in the rococo style, embellishing ships, buildings, furniture, needlework, coats of arms, and paintings – including portraits by John Singleton Copley. The frame, dated to circa 1765-75 may well be by Welch.”
“This exceptional piece of American heraldic art remained in the Welch family for generations; its last Welch owner was Charles Alfred Welch (1815-1908), a founder of the Boston-based wealth management firm Welch & Forbes.”
“The author of the Welch Genealogy (1902) and a life member of NEHGS, Charles A. Welch likely commissioned the center panel between 1875 and 1900.”
